"Cupid , il dio dell'amore sta sui simboli calpestati della musica , scienza , guerra , e governo , illustrano Virgil’s linea : “ l'amore conquista tutto ; cediamo tutti all'amore ! ” Caravaggio’s raffigurazione di cupido , piuttosto che il cherub-like , ragazzo idealizzato , è realistico , dal sorriso storto alla chioma arruffata . il dipinto fu commissionato da un ricco mecenate vincenzo guistanini , che lo ha mantenuto in suo possesso e, a quanto si dice, lo ha amato sopra tutti gli altri . Il dipinto fu un successo immediato , e ispirato opere d'arte contemporanea , tra cui poesie ed epigrammi lungo lo stesso tema . "
